Is it ok to squeeze money out of content providers ?

Content providers are often considered as free riders by network operators, which levy charges for the use of their network to recover their costs. But such charges may seriously reduce the profitability of the content providers’ business, which relies largely on their advertising income. As we have shown in our paper "How Much Can Content Providers Afford to Pay for Network Charges ?" (presented at the Sixth UKSim/AMSS European Symposium on Computer Modeling and Simulation, EMS 2012), this may not be in the general interest if customers are also charged on a volume basis. Here you can find our presentation at the conference.

Network charges on content providers

Network providers time and again ask to get a share of content providers' profits. Is that position sustainable ? Our paper "How Much Can Content Providers Afford to Pay for Network Charges?" has just been published at the Sixth UKSim/AMSS European Symposium on Computer Modeling and Simulation (EMS 2012). We propose a game-theoretic analysis of the impact of network charges on content providers' business model. Read the paper here.

Lack of cloud security may add hidden costs...

In a video interview,  Char Sample, CERT security solutions engineer, highlights security problems in clouds and suggests that the search for efficiency and cost reduction may lead to the cloud being prone to attacks, so that cloud migration may not be the right solution for the long term (read this paper for a cost-benefit analysis of cloud migration in the long term).

Sure, security is a big issue, but consider also the following two arguments.

First, are you able to provide more security in your own environment than what the cloud provider does ?

Second, there may be other remedies to poor security, e.g., negotiating SLAs with adequate performance bounds, or underwriting an insurance policy (read this paper suggesting the adoption of insurance against network failures).

Availability of cloud storage platforms

My paper "The availability of cloud-based services: is it living up to its promise ?" has just been accepted for presentation at the coming 9th International Conference on Design of Reliable Communication Networks - DRCN 2013 - to be held in Budapest, Hungary, March 4-7, 2013. The paper presents a third party analysis of the current availability performances of major cloud providers. There are not many such analyses around !
